Kildaton means the Adopted Church. Beside the church stands the most unique Celtic high Cross in Scotland. It is the only one to have survived intact for well over a thousand years of turbulent history.
Iona was a centre for thissingularly beautiful art
form which reached its highest achievement in the Book of Kells and from which were
derived the 9th century sculptured high crosses of Iona and Islay.
The main body of monks retreated to the foundation of Kells in Ireland, and carried with them the half-finished illustrated amuscripts which became the famous Book of Kells. Clearly a part of the community of Iona retreated no further than to Islay which with its much larger population afforded ample security. They settled at an original Columban cell on the South-East coast of Islay and thus, to them, became KILDALTON - the Adopted Church.
