The Island of Islay
Thanks to the
warming effects of the Gulf Stream, this inner hebridean island boasts a
wealth of wildlife and rich, green vegetation. Islay is therefore the
ideal location for a wide variety of outdoor activities including fishing
(coarse, fly and loch), shooting, cycling, walking, climbing, pony
trekking, windsurfing, golf, birdwatching and sailing. When it's wet
there is the option of a nearby swimming pool and gym. There is also
plenty for the non-sports enthusiast to do. As the ancient home of
the Lords of the Isles, Islay has a fascinating history to explore.
Alternatively, what about a visit to one of the islands' six distilleries
or a relaxing walk along one of the many beautiful sandy beaches? Islay
can be easily reached by air (30 mins from Glasgow) or ferry (2 hours from
Kintyre).
