ISLAY.COM - HolidaysLagavulin Hall, Isle of Islay
Islay is the most southerly island in the Inner Hebrides, off the
west coast of Scotland. It is one of the most beautiful and varied
of the Hebridean islands. It is famous among bird-watchers and
whiskey connoiseurs and has many sites of historical, geological and
archeological interest.
There are 2 large RSPB reserves; the area at Gruniart in the north
of the island is known for the huge flocks of geese which
over-winter there.
The distilleries of Islay are internationally famous and between
them produce some of the world's best whiskeys. A visit to a
distillery is an interesting experience even for those who don't
drink their excellent product.
There are numerous sandy beaches and opportunities for fishing,
windsurfing, mountain biking and walking, either on beaches or in
the hills.
There is an excellent golf course at Machrie, an indoor swimming
pool in Bowmore, the main town and a local museum.
Port Ellen, which is 2 miles from Lagavulin Hall, one of the 2 ports
of call for the ferry from the mainland, has shops, pubs and a post
office.
