Finlaggan

The Centre of
"The Lordship Of The Isles"
No visit to Islay
would be complete without coming to this important and
interesting site. Loch Finlaggan lies a few miles to the
south-west of Port Askaig. In the loch are three Islands,
two of which lie close to its north shore. These are
Eilean Mor and Eilean na Comhairle - the large island and
the council isle - and they contain the remains of
buildings, many of which date from Medieval times, when
this place was the centre of the realm of the Lords of
the Isles. These MacDonald lords were descended from
Somerled, a 12th century prince, and took their name from
his grandson Donald. They ruled the islands and parts of
the west coast of Scotland from Kintyre to Lewis,
virtually independent of the control of the Scottish
Crown.
An interpretive centre
in a cottage near the site is open from Easter until the
end of October, and will be opened on request out of the
season. The Centre is run by a voluntary organisation,
the Finlaggan Trust, which has worked in conjunction with
Historic Scotland to preserve the ruins on the site and
to provide information about Finlaggan both at the Centre
and on Eilean Mor.
For information on
opening times at the Centre contact the Tourist
Information Centre at Bowmore (Tel. 01496 810254) or
